Biography
Mike Coyne is a founding member of the firm. His practice focuses on business and tax planning for closely-held businesses and professional practices, and estate planning for their owners. He also spends a significant amount of time assisting businesses and practices in sales, acquisitions, and restructuring. In addition to business and tax planning, Mike advises clients on qualified retirement plan and other employee benefit matters.
A fellow in the American College of Employee Benefits Counsel, Mike served a three-year term as a member of the Internal Revenue Service’s Advisory Committee on Tax Exempt and Government Entities (the “ACT”), where he chaired its project on Section 403(b) Arrangements. He also served as an adjunct professor in the Case Western Reserve University College of Law Graduate Tax Program.
Mike was cofounder of the Cleveland Rovers Rugby Football Club. His playing days now over, Mike is active in youth sports, having recently completed an eight-year term on the Board of Rugby Ohio, the governing body for youth rugby in Ohio..
Mike and his wife, Jacque, have a daughter, three sons, and eight grandchildren.

Education, Associations & Accolades
Mike graduated with his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1974 from Ohio Wesleyan University. He went on to achieve his JD degree from Case Western Reserve University Law School in 1979.
Mike served as a contributing editor to the Section 401(k) Advisor and was a columnist for HVACR Business. He is a Fellow of the American College of Employee Benefits Counsel and a member of the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association, Ohio State Bar Association, and American Bar Association.. He serves on the board of directors at West Shore Osteopathic Foundation and The Collaborative to End Human Trafficking.
He formerly served as an adjunct professor in the Case Western Reserve University College of Law Graduate Tax Program. He is a recipient of the Commissioner’s Award from the IRS for his work with its Tax Exempt and Government Entities Division.

Beyond Waldheger • Coyne
Mike Coyne is passionate about all things rugby. Even though he might not be on the field playing anymore, he still serves as co-founder of the Cleveland Rovers Rugby Football Club and was the past President and member of the Board of Directors of Rugby Ohio, the state governing body for high school and youth rugby. He is a proud grandfather to eight grandchildren and stays busy as a member of the Ohio Rugby Disciplinary Committee.
